The defective lens caused a short-circuit in the camera and therefore damaged some camera-electronics. The release switch needs to be replaced, some fuses, as well as the USM motor and the "docking" mechanism of the lens ... cost of repair: 590 Swiss Francs.... (about 520 $) .... sheesh ... nasty surprise ... especially since I'm saving money to buy the new 5D ... but I need at least one working camera at all times ... so I guess I'll pay for the repair, and keep that one as a backup after I bought the 5D in a couple of months
---------------------------
Damn ... I loaded the freshly charged battery into my Canon EOS 30D and changed the lens ... when I switched on: NOTHING ..., exccept for a strange blue ligt (PICT Bridge) I've never seen before .... nothing helped ... the camera is dead ... so I had to send it in for repairs ....
Meaning, no shoots for probably the next couple of weeks ... but not to worry, dear watchers, I have a huge archive to draw from

Turns out I was a vampire myself
In my case it's my computer screen that died... Oh well...

It's an easy fix... you simply reboot the firmware on the camera, and how you do that is this... turn the camera on, and while the camera is on, pop the batteries. Wait about ten seconds 9or longer, but ten is usually enough) and then turn the camera off, and THEN put the batteries back in, and turn it on again. If it is the firmware, that will fix it. You will of course have to reset the date and all that, but, it's an easy fix.
It's only when that method fails that I'll call for a repair shop (cause even that trick will cost you from a camera repair shop...)
