Intelligent Women are ugly...

Tue Nov 25, 2008, 12:31 AM
... I don't think so. :)

This photo

which depicts a neurologist (the model) in front of her lab work for some cells, sparked a comment about "Who would have thought that a Neurologist would want to pose for nude shots".

I think this comment raises some interesting issues: Why do people think that wanting to pose nude has anything to do with the profession people are in?

Agreed, some professions might be more delicate than others, when it comes to letting other people *know* how you look like underneath your clothes, i.e. agreeing to have the images published, but why should someone's education determine whether they feel comfortable in their body enough to even *try* having some nude shots taken for themselves ...

In this case, the model liked my previous work with this kind of technique, and, being a scientist, I guess she is interested in experimenting anyway ... so that's what we did. I found it especially intriguing to bring together her work as a scientist and her beautiful form as a woman in this back projection shot.

Of course, as it turns out she is not only well educated, but also has an incredible body, but why not? Why do people somehow automatically associate intelligence with *not good looking*??

Food for thought I guess...

Most educated/scientific women are pigeonholed as being meek.
:iconravenstromdans:
I think the supposition there isn't that "intelligent women are stupid", but rather that people don't associate intelligence with sexuality, or more particularly the extroversion that is suggested by overt nudity.

I love intelligent women. They are the ones that don't intimidate me. Sweet pic!

Don't want to edit it too much, this is the answer I posted on the first shot: [link]

I don't quite agree. I think you're taking his comment the wrong way. And I don't believe he thinks education has anything to do with being comfortable in one's body.
To some extent, it does have to do with education, it's just a question of statistics. People with very intellectual jobs tend to pay more attention to the world of the mind than to the world of the body, and not being interested in nude art is usually one of the consequences.
I think you're reading way too far in his comment.

how can you get from his comment that 'intelligent people are ugly' or 'modelling nude is for the dumb and stupid'. First of all, her job has got nothing to do with her intelligence. She may have a powerful mind, but that doesn't mean she's intelligent, and studies are no proofs of intelligence (and I know what I'm saying, I've got a phd and I don't think I'm intelligent).

What he's meaning, or at least how I understand it is that people of the high society don't tend to pose nude, that's all. That's statistics. What is the reason behind that statistic has probably got nothing to do with what you understood, like them being ugly or stuff like that. It's just that they sometime can't afford to do that (what would there clients think, imagine if your highshool son's math teacher was a pornstar, most parents would want her out of the picture), or don't want to have to face the people who would judge etc... Posing nude has strictly got nothing to do with intelligence, it's much more a question of ideas, of courage and of ';possibility'. But first of all, of ideas. I love nudes, my favourite model is my girlfriend, but I'll never share her shots with anybody. At some point there's also a question of intimacy

*Can I have her number?*

is also one of these comments that make me cringe everytime. 'Cause you already know the answer.

I take it from a different angle by something that happened the other day.

I was sat next to a girl at the training centre I had never met before. She was plastered in make-up and wore fake nails, several gold rings etc, but she was friendly enough. Anywho this guy there who spends most of his time speaking rubbish appears and talks about a job he saw advertised, a "topless cleaner".

So he turns to the girl next to me (he did know her) and asks if she would do it. She says yea why not, she's confident with her body and its good money. He turns to me and says he knows I wouldn't do it as I'm too bright for that...I'd probably have more dignity than that.

I was horrified by what he said. Okay so this girl dropped out of school and says she'd do it, but he was as good as suggesting of course she would because she isn't that bright therefore can't have the same dignity as me. I didn't see it as her having no dignity, I saw it as her having confidence and knowing what her strengths are. No, I wouldn't clean a guys house topless so he could get his kicks, but should she be judged as dumb because she would?

Thinking that smart women are ugly AND thinking that men believe that smart women are ugly, are equally prejudice thaughts.

Furthermore, I will NEVER deny myself the pleasure of expressing my love for women, not even if it doesn´t suit you at the time. Had I been a homosexual and explicitly expressing something positive about a man in te same manner, you would never had said anything. For some reason, a heterosexual man has become the stigma of the western world. I think this is so sad.

On the other hand, some men are degrading in their attitude towards women, and it is not your fault for believing that I could have been one them. Nevertheless I admire your work and have a great deal of respect for what you do, and what you where trying to do now, namely standing up for the respect of a woman.

Thank you for your time (and art) / Pelle

*can I have her number* is an odd way to express your love for women, then ...

It's not that it doesn't suit ME, it just again shows a lack of respect towards the model. She has not agreed to have her images published in order to get phone calls from unknown men. She did it because she liked my work. So the question for a phone number is totally irrelevant in the context of an art website.

I mean, come on, it's clear that I am not gonna give it to you, so why ask at all ...

to express *your love for women*, you could find better words in a comment...

thanks for appreciating my work though.

Well he was probably implying that people with a good education don't necessarily need to resort to these kinds of jobs, as they have more job opportunities in "real" professions.
(and don't take me wrong... "education" has nothing to do with "intelligence" in my opinion, and by 'intelligence' I don't necessarily refer to the western IQ-standardized kind).

However, why should a person with a university degree (or not) not *enjoy* the job of "topless cleaner"? The key word here is "enjoy" ... If you HAVE to do it just for the money, because you don't have education to do anything else, then that's exploitation to some degree. But if you don't have education and choose to do it because you like it, that doesn't make you stupid.

Oh I get it...

When you put a word lke this *happy*, it means you are joking or being sarcastic. In this case happy would mean not happy. Of course I don't her number. Know that I understand what you felt, I am sorry that I caused any bad sentiments. I AM SORRY
